The Common Types of Pests Found in Homes and Businesses

Did you know that there are 10 quintillion individual insects alive at any given time? Don’t worry, though, most of them are harmless. Only a small percentage are considered pests.

Take cockroaches, for example, they can spread various diseases such as dysentery, cholera, leprosy, and cardia. Not only that, but they can also trigger asthma and allergies.

What other types of pests are there? How can you keep them away from your property or business?

We’ll be going over the answers in detail below. Keep reading to learn more about the topic!

1. Rodents

Rodents such as rats and mice can easily damage the structural integrity of your home. For example, it’s not uncommon for them to gnaw away at insulation and framing (e.g. roof trusses, headers, floor joists). That’s not all—they can also chew through wires, which can turn into a fire hazard.

On top of all that, they can carry many diseases such as salmonella, leptospirosis, and hantavirus.

To prevent them from coming into your property, it’s important that you block all entry blocks—this includes cracks, holes, and gaps. You also want to eliminate their food source. This means storing food in tightly-sealed glass or plastic containers as they can chew through food packaging.

2. Termites

Termites can cause significant damage to your house or business. This has to do with the fact that they feed on wood and wood byproducts (e.g. sawdust, paper, wood chips).

For example, they can eat into the very structure of your property including the ceiling, support beams, and posts. What’s worse is that they can cause extensive damage before you even realize that you have a termite problem.

In addition to that, they’re notoriously hard to get rid of. While there are various DIY treatments available, they’re generally not very effective. More likely than not, you’ll have to call in a commercial pest control company—they’ll have the proper tools and products for getting rid of pests.

3. Flies

House flies are not only nuisance pests, but they can also spread diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, and shigellosis. For example, they can transmit pathogens to foods or other surfaces when they land.

These household pests also have a short gestation period of around 24 hours, which means that their numbers can quickly get out of hand. Given that, constant measures will be necessary to get rid of them.

For instance, you can make a trap with vinegar and dish soap (the latter will act as glue and keep them stuck in the vinegar). There are also commercial traps that you can get, some of which use lights to lure in the insects.

Identifying the Most Common Types of Pests

There are several types of pests that are often found in homes and businesses—from rodents to flies. For those who are dealing with an infestation, call a pest removal company right away. Don’t wait as the situation will only worsen with time.
